Carseland Cogeneration Plant

Power Icon

Overview

Since 2001, Carseland has been providing Alberta with up to 95 megawatts of electricity from its industrial cogeneration plant located in Carseland, Alta., at Nutrien’s Carseland Nitrogen Operation. In addition to supplying Nutrien with a stable source of power and steam, the plant offers much needed support for the Southern Alberta electrical grid – contributing to a stable source of electricity for Alberta homes and businesses.

FAQs

Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of two forms of useful energy from a single fuel source, often electricity and steam from natural gas. Cogeneration plants minimize fuel consumption, save money and can greatly reduce emissions.

The Carseland facility has a capacity of 95 megawatts of electricity with 120 tonnes per hour of steam also produced, which is captured and delivered to Nutrien for its operations.  The plant is designed to operate at full load, 24 hours per day, year-round (except during periods of routine maintenance).

Carseland uses clean-burning natural gas in combustion turbines to produce electricity. The plant is highly fuel-efficient with Dry Low Knox combustion technology to minimize emissions.
